Khalid: Nah · Immersive VR Campaign
Creative Producer & VR CinematographerDirected and produced the flagship immersive 3D VR music experience showcasing the consumer fidelity of the Samsung XR headset for Google. Bridged multi-camera stereoscopic optical rigs with custom software tooling to turn a complex technical launch into an intimate, award-winning musical narrative.
The Brief & Hardware Challenge
For the market rollout of the Samsung XR headset platform, Google needed flagship creative content that proved spatial computing could deliver emotional, cinematic intimacy rather than gimmicky tech demonstrations. The challenge was multifaceted: capture Grammy-nominated artist Khalid in a visually rich environment that rewarded 360-degree spatial curiosity while maintaining uncompromising optical fidelity, perfect stereoscopic depth alignment, and zero viewer fatigue.
Traditional VR productions suffer from sterile lighting and disconnected staging because standard production monitors flatten 3D spatial geometry. We set out to treat spatial VR with the same lighting nuance, lens character, and emotional pacing as an A24 feature film.
Creative Direction & Spatial Choreography
Instead of locking the camera off as a passive observer, we designed intimate blocking where Khalid and the environment dynamically engage the viewer's gaze. Lighting ratios were graded specifically for high-dynamic-range OLED micro-displays, balancing deep obsidian shadows with incandescent golden highlights that pull the eye naturally across the environment.
Every spatial transition was timed to audio cadence, using directional spatial audio cues to guide viewer attention seamlessly without jarring whip-pans or disorientation.
Technical Breakthrough: VR Live-View
The greatest friction in high-resolution VR production has always been iteration velocity: 12K stereoscopic camera feeds typically take hours to render before directors and clients can evaluate real depth and color in the headset. Directors were forced to judge 3D spatial balance on flat 2D monitors.
To eliminate this bottleneck, I architected VR Live-View: a native in-headset spatial review plugin. This enabled our director, creative leads, and Google clients to review live stereoscopic camera feeds and editorial cuts in real time directly inside the Samsung XR headset right in the edit bay. What previously took six hours of batch processing was reduced to instantaneous in-headset playback, unlocking rapid creative experimentation.
Impact & Industry Acclaim
The finished experience became the premier showcase title for Google and Samsung's XR launch, demonstrating that spatial storytelling can achieve museum-grade artistic integrity. The piece earned a prestigious Webby Award Nomination for best immersive video experience, proving that combining master-level cinematography physics with custom software engineering elevates emerging creative mediums.
